FACE OF INDUSTRY

Recovered: SHIPYARDS North Vancouver - LOT 5 - 30 feet underground

The core object utilized in this piece is a singular ship’s propeller blade recovered at the Wallace Shipyards, (c1905). One side of the blade is a rich patina of elements indicative of its past life and time abandoned including barnacles, old rivets, coal, wood & leather. The other side of the blade is the face of an industry, Alfred Wallace, the original proprietor of The Shipyards. 15000 men and women were employed at these shipyards prior to world war 2. These people came from all reaches of the globe for an opportunity to create a new life for themselves and their families.
